Board flags

A flag is a named location on the Board. Some flags are just a spot you marked; the rest sit on something — a pinned file, Image, or Video, or a frame Mesh drew — and carry a small mark of what they sit on. Either way a flag works like anything else you have saved: jump straight to it, point at it from a Note, a Topic, or a chat, and show Mesh which part of the Board you mean.

Add a flag

Flags sits beside the page name in the Board toolbar: its left half opens the list of every flag, and Add flag beside it adds one.

  • A new flag lands in the middle of your view. That is where Add flag puts it.
  • Press F to put one at your pointer. The same flag, dropped where the cursor is.
  • It arrives named. Flag 1, Flag 2, and so on, with the name selected so you can type straight over it.
  • Drag a corner to resize it. A flag goes down to half size and up to double.

Flags that sit on something

A pinned file, Image, or Video, and anything Mesh draws, is a flag from the moment it lands. The flag sits in the tile's own header, and a small corner mark says what it sits on. Two examples:

  • It arrives named after what it is on — the item's title, plus the pages for a PDF (Chapter 2 · Pages 3-8). Rename it from the flag's menu when the spot comes to mean something more.
  • It leaves with the pin or the frame. Unpin the tile or delete the frame and its flag goes too; these flags have no separate delete.

Reach it from anywhere

A flag is one of the seven things a Reference can point at, so a place on the Board can sit in a Note, on a Topic page, or in a chat, like any other Reference. A pinned file has two rows in the picker: the file itself under Library, and its flag under Board flags — pick the flag when you mean the spot on the Board.

  • Go straight there. Go to flag moves the Board to that spot.
  • Or find it without moving. Open in Board flags picks the flag out in the list and leaves your view where it is.
  • Point Mesh at it. Choose the flag as Focus to tell Mesh the question is about that spot.

Find your way back

Jump to a flag from something you were working in — a Note, a Topic, a source in your Library — and the flag grows a Return to ... button pointing back at where you left.

  • It names where you came from. The button shows that name for a few seconds, then shrinks to a small arrow with the full name in its tooltip.
  • It stays for the session. The flag keeps that Return until a later jump gives it a new one.
  • It is not Back. Back and Forward restore panel selections rather than replaying a Board jump.

Flags opens it: every flag on the Board, grouped by page in the Board's own page order, with the page you're on tagged Current.

  • Every row jumps. Its go-to button moves the Board to that flag.
  • Open a row for the rest. Its In topics join the header, and a comment that saves as you type opens below.
  • Rename by tapping the name of an open row.
  • The corner mark and the word after the name say what the flag sits on. A flag that is just a spot has neither. The type filter uses the same words, with Spot for plain flags.

Tip:  Name a flag for what the spot means (Worked example 3, Final layout), not where it happens to sit on screen.
